En la decada de los 70 el cantante formó parte de la banda musical The Commodores, propiedad del conocido sello musical Motown de Detroit. A partir de 1981 inició su carrera en solitario, logrando un gran éxito al permanecer dos semanas en el Billboard con el tema Hello para consolidarse después con el tema Say you, say me, el cual ganó un premio Oscar de la Academia a la mejor canción en una película.
Sus canciones de letras sentimentales y su voz modulada, hicieron que Richie estuviese en la lista Billboard en los años 1980, su época dorada.
